Family of murdered Kwara student plead for release of remains for burial

The grieving family of Hafsoh Lawal, a final-year student of the Kwara State College of Education brutally murdered in February, has appealed to the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin to release her remains for proper Islamic burial.

The appeal was presented by the Kwara State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, during the continuation of the trial of five suspects charged in connection with the murder.

The lead suspect, Abdulrahman Bello, is facing charges alongside four others for conspiracy and homicide.

During Monday’s court session, the lead defence counsel, Mr. Chukwudi Maduka, who is representing Bello, raised no objections to the family’s request.

He also extended his condolences, acknowledging the family’s pain.

The hearing saw the testimony of three additional witnesses – two police investigators and a pathologist from the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Dr. Olaleke Folaranmi.

According to investigators from the ‘C’ Division, Oja Oba, and the State CID, the first defendant, Bello, voluntarily confessed to the crime.

They said he led police officers to his apartment, where some body parts were recovered, and later to two separate dumpsites in Olunlade and Okolowo-Eyenkorin where additional remains were discovered.

“By the time we got to the dumpsite, the body parts had already been moved by refuse collectors,” one of the CID officers testified. “A scavenger eventually led us to where they were dumped, and the suspect confirmed they were the deceased’s remains.”

The prosecution also presented a video recording showing the recovery of body parts from Bello’s apartment. Despite opposition from the defence team, the court admitted the footage along with its certificate of compliance as evidence.

Another witness, Sergeant Moses, testified that Hafsoh was reported missing on February 11. He explained that Bello became a prime suspect after phone records showed he was her last known contact. Upon searching Bello’s residence, police found Hafsoh’s personal belongings, blood-stained weapons, charms, and human body parts soaked in gin. He also alleged that Bello attempted to bribe officers during the investigation.

Dr. Folaranmi, the pathologist, confirmed through autopsy that the remains were human and consistent with those of Hafsoh. His findings were submitted to the court as Exhibit P17.

Presiding Judge, Justice Hannah Ajayi, denied a bail application filed by the defence, describing it as a distraction. She assured the court that the matter would be handled with urgency and adjourned the case to May 21, 2025, for continuation of the hearing.

LaLiga: Real Madrid suffer Vinicius Jr injury blow after Barcelona defeat

Real Madrid have confirmed that Vinicius Junior has suffered an ankle injury.

Vinicius picked up the problem after their 4-3 El Clasico defeat to Barcelona.

The Brazilian was forced off during the match on Sunday.

The club has now said the 24-year-old has picked up an ankle sprain, but did not state how long he will be sidelined for.

“Following tests carried out today on our player Vinicius Jr. by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a sprained left ankle. The outcome is pending,” an official statement read.

This injury rubs salt into Madrid’s gaping wound after their deflating loss to Barcelona.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men had to beat Barca to keep their title hopes alive. But the loss leaves them seven points adrift with just three fixtures left.

And not having Vinicius Jr will make their task even more improbable.

Natasha Slams Akpabio Over Contempt Suit, Says Court Order Was Suspended

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has pushed back against claims that she violated a court order in the ongoing legal tussle with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, insisting she has not acted in contempt of any valid judicial directive.

Responding to contempt proceedings initiated against her, Senator Natasha clarified that the interim order issued by Justice Nyako had already been suspended by the court on April 8, 2024, and thus cannot be the basis for any contempt allegation.

“I have not disobeyed any valid court order. The interim order referenced by Senator Akpabio was suspended. Any claim that I acted in defiance of the court is misleading and intended to harass me,” she said on Thursday.

Addressing claims that her earlier apology constituted an admission of guilt, Senator Natasha maintained that the apology was made as a gesture of reconciliation, not as a confession of wrongdoing.

“My apology letter did not admit that I breached any court order. It was a gesture of peace and reconciliation, not an acceptance of wrongdoing. I find it disingenuous that the Senate President is weaponizing that letter to stifle my voice,” she added.

The senator argued that the suit against her violates Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression, and accused Akpabio of using judicial processes to intimidate her and suppress dissent within the Senate.

“Senator Akpabio is attempting to weaponize the court to silence a fellow senator. This is not just about me—it is about the democratic principles we swore to uphold,” she emphasized.

She also questioned Akpabio’s priorities, saying, “Is it not curious that while I’m being dragged for exercising my right to speak, the Senate President remains silent on far more serious allegations within the National Assembly? Why is he so afraid of scrutiny?”

Senator Natasha vowed to defend herself in court and called on civil society groups, the media, and Nigerians to resist judicial intimidation.

“I have instructed my legal team to file the necessary responses. I also call on the media, activists, and the public to stand against any form of judicial intimidation,” she said.

The court is yet to rule on the contempt suit filed by the Senate President, as political tensions within the upper chamber continue to escalate.
